Established in Missoula, Montana in 1986, Counter Assault began marketing its bear spray, which has since been carried by National Park rangers, hunters, hikers, guides, and others venturing into the backcountry. Later that year, the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee, composed of various US Forest Service, state agencies, and other government personnel, awarded Counter Assault the 1998 Grizzly Bear Stewardship Award for its significant contributions to the research and development of bear deterrent pepper spray.
